Een opvallend sobere film voor cultregisseur Mitchell, over de rouw in een jong gezin na het overlijden van hun peuterzoon door een autoongeluk. Moeder Becca tracht de moed op te brengen om vooruit te kijken, terwijl haar echtgenoot Howie zijn steun zoekt bij praatgroepen. Als Becca een voorzichtige vriendschap opbouwt met de automobilist, een middelbare scholier uit de buurt, lijken zij en Howie nog verder van elkaar verwijderd te raken.
