IFFB stops, new part in a larger festival
As of November 1st 2011, the International Film Festival Breda has been dissolved, and will no longer exist with it's original organization. After three terrific festivals, a fourth edition will not take place in March of 2012. From the newly reopened House for Visual Culture, the Breda located festivals will like Graphic Design Festival Breda and Breda Photo will, combined, present an all new, larger than life festival about visual culture in all shapes and sizes, disciplines and art forms.

Film will certainly be a part of this new festival: CICADA Studio will carry on the festivals’ initial goal to bring film as a part of visual culture to a large audience, together with the House for Visual Culture.

For more information please visit the House for Visual Culture.

48 hours, 15 awards

The three judges- producer Jacques van Heijningen, director Mark de Cloe and actress Chava Voor in’t Holt - gave out, in total, 15 category awards. With films such as ‘Het leven uit een dag’ and ‘Shocking Blue’, and of course his short series ‘Girl meets Boy-stories’, Mark de Cloe turned in to one of the countries most appreciated and leading directors these past years.
The opening film of this year, the Oscar winning ‘In a Better World’ by Susanne Bier, got second place.

The top-5 HEJA Audience Award 2011:
1. 'De sterkste man van Nederland' 4,95
2. 'In a Better World' 4,74
3. 'As if I Am Not There' 4,54
4. 'Almanya' 4,51
5. 'Leef!' 4,5

And the NTR Early Bird winner is..
The French director Damien Manivel wins the NTR Early Bird Award 2011 for his ‘La dame au chien’. Manivel was not present at the festival, but thanked the IFFB, the judges and the audience in a video message from France. See the

The jury, consisting of Rene van Engelenburg, Alex Taylor and Eric de Haas praised ‘La dame au chien’ for its ‘innovative sense for narrative, perfectly combined with strong casting and an uncanny tension. The film leaves the audience with questions, not to tease or deliberately be abstract, but as a result of the uncomfortable shame concerning your own thoughts.

The Belgian/French production ‘Thermes’ from director Banu Akseki got a ‘special mention’ from the judges. They called the film “a surprisingly complete short film. It’s a sensitive portrait in which the collision of two different worlds comes to the screen. The craftsmanship required to balance this constantly moving narrative is very, very promising.”

IFFB's opening film wins Oscar!

Last night IFFB's opening film 'In a Better World' won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Feature Film! The festival is very happy to congratulate director Susanne Bier on this splendid award!

After directing such top European arthouse favourites as 'After the Wedding' and 'Brothers', Susanne Bier now receives a triumph in international recognition. 'In a Better World' will undoubtedly be appreciated by moviegoers and arthouse lovers alike.

'In a Better World' is the tale of two famillies descending in a spiral of aggression and misunderstanding as their young sons bond in a special but dangerous friendship. While their parents are preoccupied with their own lives, their seemingly small conflicts grow to dangerous proportions.

'In a Better World' will have its Dutch premiere at the Grand Opening on March 23rd. Certainly an experience not to be missed, especially considering Susanne Bier's Oscar victory!

Opening Film IFFB 2011 'In a Better World'

The IFFB will have its Grand Opening on Wednesday 23 March with the Dutch premiere of 'In a Better World' directed by Susanne Bier.

After her previous success with films like 'After the Wedding' and 'Brothers', which were loved by critics as well by audiences worldwide, Susanne Bier presents yet another great film. 'In a Better World' has already won a Golden Globe for best foreign film and is nominated for an Oscar in the same category.

The film tells the story of two Danish families whose lives become dangerous when the sons make a special friendship with each other. Anton is a doctor who commutes between his home in Denmark and his work in an African refugee camp. He and his family are confronted with these two completely different worlds, leading to several difficult decisions. A drama film about the complexity of human emotions.

Ticket sales for the Grand Opening start on March 1st.
